USB2NANO – The WLAN Adapter for CS141, BACS WEBMANAGER, and SITEMANAGER

26 February 2025

Maximum Flexibility & Security for Your Network Integration

With the new USB2NANO WLAN adapter, GENEREX offers an innovative solution for all CS141, BACS, and SITEMANAGER devices. This upgrade not only enhances flexibility in network connectivity but also enables effective redundancy, simplified maintenance, and increased security.

Universal Compatibility

GENEREX offers these WLAN adapters for the EU, while the US version must be ordered from GENEREX USA.
Both models have been thoroughly tested for cybersecurity compliance.

💡 We prioritize maximum flexibility – any USB WLAN adapter officially approved in the respective country and featuring a Realtek RTL8188EU chipset can be used for WiFi connections in compliance with the 802.11 standard.

🔗 Compatibility:
All CS141 devices from hardware revision HW161 onward and running at least Firmware 2.24 can be equipped with the USB2NANO, as long as a USB port is available.

Simple & Intuitive:
Set Up WLAN in Just a Few Steps

How it works:
✅ Plug the USB2NANO into the USB port – it will be automatically detected.
✅ Define SSID & password in the network settings menu.
✅ The device is now wirelessly accessible.

Four Key Use Cases for USB2NANO

1️⃣ Service Interface: “On-Demand” WLAN for Technicians

More and more companies prohibit external devices on their network or require complex approval processes. This makes it difficult for service technicians who need immediate access to CS141 systems.

  • With USB2NANO, a separate, secure ad-hoc WLAN is set up, accessible only to the technician.
  • Quick access without IT approval – via smartphone hotspot or laptop.
  • Maintenance, updates & troubleshooting without connecting to the customer's network.
Illustration: While LAN access is fully assigned to the user, a mobile AdHOC network can be set up using the NANO2USB and a standard smartphone. This allows technicians to easily carry out maintenance work on a CS141 / BACS / SITEMANAGER without having to ask the network administrator for help.

2️⃣ Redundancy: Dual Networks for Maximum Security

In large networks, redundancy is critical. If routers or firewalls in the LAN fail, UPS data retrieval can be interrupted.

  • With USB2NANO, a CS141 can communicate via two independent networks in parallel – wired (LAN) and wireless (WLAN).
  • In the event of a failure, access via WLAN remains available, and monitoring systems like UNMS can still track the network status.
Illustration: Redundancy: A failure of a network component, such as the router, would prevent the UPS data from being retrieved without Wi-Fi. However, thanks to Wi-Fi, a wireless connection remains active, ensuring that UPS data remains accessible in parallel.

3️⃣ Pipe-Through via WLAN: Two Networks, One CS141

Previously, separate CS141 devices were required for different networks. The Pipe-Thru function has been used for years to facilitate this.

Illustration: PIPE_THROUGH: The traditional approach for UPS connection works via daisy chain of the RS232/485 protocol of the UPS: Each network gets its own CS141 web manager. With USB2NANO, the number of devices required is halved.
  • USB2NANO enables the separation of two networks with just one device.
  • Typical use case: A central UPS is shared by multiple companies.
  • Each company maintains its own shutdown concepts without compromising security.
Illustration: A CS141 with a USB2NANO operates two networks.

4️⃣ Secure Isolation of Untrusted UPS Network Devices

New EU regulations (NIS2, CRA, and DORA) introduce stricter network security requirements. In particular, SNMP cards from China are considered potential security risks and are often banned from networks. USB2NANO offers a secure alternative:

  • Untrusted network cards are isolated via a peer-to-peer connection.
  • No direct connection between the UPS and the customer’s network.
  • Instead of using firewalls or complex router rules, USB2NANO handles the secure forwarding of UPS data via WLAN.
Illustration: The CS141 queries the insecure network card of the UPS directly via SNMP RFC1628. The insecure network card is prevented from accessing the network via the firewall. The CS141 is permitted and “filters” the UPS data into the secure network.

Conclusion:

Service Interface: Ad-hoc WLAN for technicians without network approvals
Redundancy: Dual network connectivity for maximum security
Pipe-Thru via WLAN: Two independent networks with just one CS141
Secure Isolation: Protection against untrusted SNMP cards & cyber threats
